{"id":249,"date":"2013-12-07T11:30:10","date_gmt":"2013-12-07T19:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.schafenfreude.com\/?p=249"},"modified":"2013-12-07T12:35:30","modified_gmt":"2013-12-07T20:35:30","slug":"pushing-rocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.schafenfreude.com\/?p=249","title":{"rendered":"Pushing Rocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A big thing that weaving has taught me is not being able to simply give up on something once it gets difficult or after I&#8217;ve made a mistake. \u00a0 Now, I&#8217;ve never been one to do anything in a small way and the same holds true for my mishaps. \u00a0That said, here&#8217;s what&#8217;s been making me crazy of late.<\/p>\n<p>Back in early October (I&#8217;m nearly ashamed to say that) I put on a gradient warp. \u00a0I sell a lot of dishtowels, both around the holidays and at our annual Art Fair and this was an attempt to get ahead of the game so that things don&#8217;t get so hectic in mid-August. \u00a0The gradients are fun to plan\/wind and the resulting towels are really quite lovely. \u00a0So, great! \u00a0A long warp and hopefully 15 towels to go into the bin post-haste.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to starting to thread and me counting out the ends in the first section of the warp. \u00a0Rather than hitting the end of the section after the expected number of threads, I was only halfway through. \u00a0I sat there, slightly puzzled, and then it dawned on me &#8211; I&#8217;d wound twice as many ends per section. \u00a0(Have I mentioned that AVL Warping Wheels are fun?) \u00a0I quickly grabbed another section and sure enough &#8211; same problem. \u00a0Oh, crap. \u00a0That whole beam is wound incorrectly. \u00a0And that&#8217;s not a 15 yard warp, it&#8217;s effectively a 30 yard warp. \u00a0Too much yarn to simply cut off and bin so I had to do something. \u00a0I started thinking about doubleweave placemats (but they&#8217;d be too wide) or maybe a few lengths of cloth (but I wouldn&#8217;t want that gradient and I&#8217;d not done anything to manage the fold) or even maybe something purely artistic (but 15 YARDS WORTH?). \u00a0I knew doubleweave would be in there somewhere but it was time to head off to SOAR and I could just let it rattle around in the back of my brain for a couple weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Now, shortly after SOAR I went off to Boulder for a weaving class with Sharon Alderman and that gave me the kick in the butt I needed &#8211; in a variety of ways. \u00a0Resolved: doubleweave, separate lengths of cloth that could be cut apart as per usual. \u00a0However &#8211; this is boring. \u00a0Really boring. \u00a0And slow because two shuttles. \u00a0After three yards of this I was really starting to get antsy. \u00a0Cue Sharon&#8217;s little voice in my head and my trusty copy of Fiberworks.<\/p>\n<p>When I did my first shirt, I used Bronson to break up the long, vertical stripes. \u00a0The gradient warp had that same vertical characteristic so I decided to see if I could manage a spot Bronson on a straight-twill threading. \u00a0Oh, and I had to do it in doubleweave as well. \u00a0One day of messing about, adjusting and fiddling yielded this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-7zgLY0VwNAc\/UpZhVNAVzHI\/AAAAAAAADOw\/Hm_oF6XDqlo\/s640\/doubleweave.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-7zgLY0VwNAc\/UpZhVNAVzHI\/AAAAAAAADOw\/Hm_oF6XDqlo\/s640\/doubleweave.jpg\" width=\"288\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The thickness of the warp and weft threads are adjusted so that I could visually check my work, but suffice to say, it worked! \u00a0At least on the computer. \u00a0Time to try it on the AVL:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-BPvfiHpu99o\/Up-0PferauI\/AAAAAAAADR4\/Ek5jMY9d9-Y\/s640\/IMG_3027.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-BPvfiHpu99o\/Up-0PferauI\/AAAAAAAADR4\/Ek5jMY9d9-Y\/s640\/IMG_3027.JPG\" width=\"288\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perfect. Love it.
